Towards an Adaptive Approach that Combines Semantic Web Technologies and Metaheuristics to Create and Recommend Learning Objects
Cleon Pereira Junior, Fabiano Dorça, Rafael Araujo
Student: Cleon Xavier Pereira Junior, Universidade Federal de Uberlândia, Brazil
Supervisors: Fabiano Dorça, Rafael Araujo
Mentor: Seiji Isotani
Abstract: This work aims to present a proposal that com- bines semantic web and metaheuristic strategies to create and recommend web-based Learning Objects (LO) according to learners’ preferences. The general idea is to create a content recommendation process that uses existing resources from the Web to recommend LO in virtual learning environments. In this approach, knowledge level and Learning Styles are considered in the student model.Preliminary results have shown the possibility of creation and personalized recommendation using Wikipedia contents. At the end, some questions according to the recommen- dation process and the web content should be
answered.

Student: RAFAELA RIBEIRO JARDIM, UFRGS, Brasil
Supervisor: Valdeni Lima, Raquel Salcedo Gomes
Title: Learning Trajectories and Usability in a Health Care application
Mentor: Patricia Jaques and Sean Siqueira
Abstract: This project proposes to investigate the usability aspects considering the user’s perception during the experience of using CareTaker mobile application. CareTaker is primarily aimed at helping caregivers and patients in health promotion through planned routines, medical records, the filling of forms and hypervideo learning resources. In order to meet the research objectives, a theoretical framework will be developed relating the notions of m-learning, health care and usability. The research is characterized as exploratory and applied. Regarding technical procedures, it may also be considered experimental, with a qualitative approach. The full project consists of two studies. Study I shall focus on the design and development of CareTaker mobile application and Study II aims to evaluate three aspects of CareTaker usability: effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction. For Study I, five steps are being implemented: i) analysis of requirements, content and functionalities; ii) interface planning and navigability; iii) prototype development; iv) pilot test for prototype validation with expert users; and v) prototype adjustment and refinement for validation of the final product. Finally, Study II proposes a test of the application use to evaluate the usability aspects.

A Strategy for the Development of Computational Thinking from Game Design Specifications
Kleber Tavares Fernandes, Marcia Lucena, Eduardo Aranha
Student: Kleber Tavares Fernandes, UFRN, Brazil
Supervisor: Marcia Lucena, Eduardo Aranha
Title: A Strategy for the Development of Computational Thinking from Game Design Specifications
Mentor: Rita Kuo
Abstract: Digital games are becoming more and more a part of our daily lives. After realizing this, several educators have been motivated to use games as teaching and learning tools. In this sense, it is possible to involve teachers and students in the production of their own games, thus contributing both to the development of computational thinking and to acquiring knowledge related to the different disciplines involved in this process. Despite the benefits, the production of games is a complex task that requires knowledge of a specific domain and presents a significant learning curve for students and teachers. The choice of using effective strategies such as Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) practices supported by a Controlled Natural Language (CNL) to promote the production of games in the educational context is decisive and can favor the adoption of game-based learning. This work proposes a strategy for the specification of game design for digital games by students and teachers in the classroom, that can promote the development of computational thinking, as well as reading and writing skills.
